{"id":12348,"date":"2014-08-29T10:41:27","date_gmt":"2014-08-29T14:41:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/n2value.com\/blog\/?p=12348"},"modified":"2014-08-29T10:48:56","modified_gmt":"2014-08-29T14:48:56","slug":"further-development-of-a-care-model","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/n2value.com\/blog\/further-development-of-a-care-model\/","title":{"rendered":"Further Development of a care model"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Let&#8217;s go back to our care model expanded upon in our <a title=\"Developing a simple care delivery model further \u2013 dependent interactions\" href=\"http:\/\/n2value.com\/blog\/developing-a-simple-care-delivery-model-further-dependent-interactions\/\">prior post.<\/a>\u00a0 As eluded to, once interdependencies are considered, things get complicated fast.\u00a0 This might not be as apparent in our four-stage ER care delivery model, but consider a larger process with six stages, and each stage being able to interact with each other.\u00a0 See the figure below:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/n2value.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/6proc.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12351\" src=\"http:\/\/n2value.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/6proc-265x300.jpg\" alt=\"6proc\" width=\"265\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/n2value.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/6proc-265x300.jpg 265w, https:\/\/n2value.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/6proc-906x1024.jpg 906w, https:\/\/n2value.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/6proc.jpg 930w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 265px) 100vw, 265px\" \/><\/a>For this figure, this is the generalized linear model with first order single interactions:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/n2value.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Complex-GLM.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12357\" src=\"http:\/\/n2value.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Complex-GLM.jpg\" alt=\"Complex GLM\" width=\"557\" height=\"153\" srcset=\"https:\/\/n2value.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Complex-GLM.jpg 557w, https:\/\/n2value.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Complex-GLM-300x82.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 557px) 100vw, 557px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A 23 term generalized linear model is probably not going to really help anyone and is too unweildy, so something needs to be done to get to the heart of the matter and create a model which is reasonably simple and will well-approximate this process.\u00a0 The issue of multi-collinearity also is relevant here.\u00a0 So, the next step is to get the number of terms down to what matters.\u00a0 This would probably be best served by a shrinkage technique or a dimension reduction technique.<\/p>\n<p>Shrinkage:\u00a0 The LASSO immediately comes to mind due to its coefficient minimization as a feature that may allow variable selection dependent on lambda.\u00a0 A ridge regression wouldn&#8217;t apply the same parsimony to the equation, so it keeps terms which may not help us simplify.\u00a0 It has been pointed out to me that there is a technique called <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elastic_net_regularization\" target=\"_blank\">elastic net regularization<\/a> which combines features of both the LASSO and ridge regression &#8211;
